Trump's Board of Peace planning pilot humanitarian zone in Gaza, official says
The project would be secured by multinational troops and screened by Palestinian technocrats as the board seeks a starting point for Gaza’s transitional governance.
- President Donald Trump's Board of Peace is planning a pilot "humanitarian zone" in Rafah to accommodate tens of thousands of vetted Palestinian civilians, secured by multinational troops from the International Stabilization Force , a board official told AFP.
- The Board was established earlier this year under a US-backed ceasefire plan to facilitate a transition away from Hamas rule, aiming to support civilian administration through The National Committee for the Administration of Gaza .
- Acting as a "kind of buffer," the ISF will separate the Palestinian population from the IDF, the official said, while a screening mechanism ensures armed individuals cannot enter these safe humanitarian zones.
- Diplomats and NGO officials working in Gaza told AFP that such access controls could restrict Palestinians' freedom of movement and may amount to forced displacement, raising concerns about compatibility with international humanitarian law.
- Efforts to advance the US-backed ceasefire plan have stalled for months, with the NCAG stuck in Egypt's capital, Cairo; Rafah remains largely under Israeli military control, and no building work has begun.
