Trump says he’ll send troops to Portland, Oregon, to handle ‘domestic terrorists’
- President Donald Trump authorized the deployment of troops to Portland, Oregon, on September 27, 2025, to protect ICE facilities amid ongoing protests.
- The deployment follows months of protests at a local ICE facility, some involving tear gas, amid the administration's crackdown on undocumented migrants and Antifa's designation as a domestic terrorist group.
- Local officials, including Governor Tina Kotek and Mayor Keith Wilson, criticized the move, noting no official request for National Guard support and describing it as an unnecessary show of force.
- Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed that the Department of Defense is prepared to deploy U.S. troops to assist Homeland Security activities in Portland if directed by the president, while Governor Kotek called for calm and expressed her opposition to any such deployment.
- The troop deployment extends Trump's contentious use of federal forces in domestic affairs, raising concerns about escalating tensions and the impact on civil liberties in Portland.
