Trump says he’ll likely sue BBC for up to $5B over edited speech, despite apology
- On Friday, President Donald Trump announced he plans to sue the BBC next week for as much as $5 billion, reaffirming his intent while on Air Force One.
- The Panorama clip edited for late-night broadcast created concerns as it gave the mistaken impression that President Trump had made a direct call for violent action, an internal memo earlier this month raised about the 6 January 2021 speech.
- On Thursday, the BBC apologised, calling the edit an "error of judgement" and promising Panorama will "not be broadcast again in this form," but refused to pay compensation.
- The controversy has already produced the resignations of BBC director general Tim Davie and head of news Deborah Turness on Sunday, while public court records show no legal action filed by the weekend.
- In a Nov. 9 letter, Trump's lawyer set a Friday evening deadline for apology, retraction, and compensation, while Trump said he would discuss the matter with Sir Keir Starmer, UK Prime Minister.
