President Trump to Meet with Former Hamas Hostage in Washington, D.C.
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, UNITED STATES, JUL 3 – Edan Alexander urged President Trump to broker a ceasefire and secure release of about 50 hostages still held by Hamas during ongoing conflict, White House said.
- Edan Alexander, a 21-year-old dual American-Israeli soldier from Tenafly, N.J., was held captive by Hamas for 19 months after the October 7, 2023 terror attacks.
- His release in May came after an extended period of diplomatic efforts and strategic military actions, including involvement by President Trump and a ceasefire plan coordinated through Qatar and Egypt.
- Alexander met privately with Trump on July 3 at the White House to thank him for securing his freedom and urged him to continue working to free the 50 remaining hostages in Gaza.
- During the meeting, Alexander said, “This is not over,” expressed fears that continued fighting endangers hostages, and Trump said he was very proud to have helped secure his release.
- The discussions highlight increased attention on achieving a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza, though Hamas has yet to accept the terms, and questions remain about the release of the remaining hostages.
