UK ‘did not like’ Starmer refusing to be drawn into Iran war, says Trump
Trump said Starmer hurt himself over energy and immigration as the Labour leader prepares to step down after months of party pressure.
On Monday, President Donald Trump criticized outgoing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer after his resignation announcement, claiming Starmer had "really hurt himself" through mishandling immigration, crime, and relations with the United States.
Trump, who had predicted the departure on Truth Social, described Starmer as "sort of a friend of mine" but noted he lacked sufficient support for the United States regarding NATO and the Iran war.
The leaders clashed over using RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus for strikes in Iran, with Trump stating, "He said we can't use the island to land. That was a first," calling the delay "a bad move."
Starmer announced his resignation Monday after facing pressure from party lawmakers following poor election results. Veteran Labour politician Andy Burnham, former mayor of Greater Manchester, is widely expected to succeed him.
At an Oval Office event, Trump accused Starmer of failing to exploit North Sea oil, instead allowing "windmills all over the place," despite Britain possessing significant offshore energy resources.
