Trump Says Palestinian Recognition a Threat to Trade Talks in Warning to Australia
PALESTINE, JUL 29 – Keir Starmer will recognise Palestine if ceasefire and peace progress occur, responding to pressure from over 250 MPs and public support of 41%, officials said.
- Announcing recognition of Palestine in September, Starmer said Britain will do so if Israel ends the 'appalling situation' in Gaza and commits to a peace process.
- Pressured from within, Starmer faced more than 250 MPs, many from his party, urging recognition of Palestine.
- Today, Starmer stipulated conditions, saying recognition depends on Israel agreeing to a cease-fire with Hamas and the release of remaining Israeli hostages.
- Meanwhile, the US president said Trump told reporters the Prime Minister was free to take a new position and added, "That’s OK, it doesn’t mean I have to agree."
- Looking beyond the UK, around 150 UN member states recognise Palestine, and Emmanuel Macron last week became the first G7 leader to announce recognition at the UN General Assembly.
