WESTERN MARYLAND, JUL 25 – Maryland plans to appeal after FEMA denied $15.8 million aid request for severe flooding damage in Allegany and Garrett counties, citing unmet federal disaster criteria.
- The White House rejected Maryland's $15.8 million FEMA disaster relief request on July 24, 2025.
- On May 12–14, 2025, extreme rainfall caused Georges Creek to reach a near-record 12.41 feet, overflowing into towns in Western Maryland.
- Through a coordinated assessment, officials found damage to roads, bridges, sewer and water systems, and over 200 homes, with evacuations in Garrett and Allegany counties.
- In response, Gov. Wes Moore said, `These communities demonstrated a clear need through FEMA’s own process` and he vowed to appeal the decision.
