61 bodies of migrants recovered in west of Libya's Tripoli, medics center says

Humanitarian teams documented and buried 61 migrant bodies recovered along Libya's western coast during two weeks of operations amid dangerous sea crossings, officials said.

  • On Saturday, the Emergency Medicine and Support Center said at least 61 migrant bodies were recovered over two weeks from Zuwara to Ras Ijdir west of Tripoli.
  • Libya has become a transit route since 2011, with 894,890 migrants from 45 nationalities residing across 100 Libyan municipalities, driven by conflict and poverty.
  • Search operations last week found at least 15 bodies between Zuwara and Mellitah, including three in Mellitah and twelve in Zuwara, while rescue teams retrieved eight last week and 26 the week before.
  • Recovered remains were taken to a forensic facility for examination before burial at Abu Kammash cemetery, with local authorities and forensic teams supervising transfers between Tripoli and Zuwara.
  • These recovery efforts form part of Libya's ongoing humanitarian operations, while the International Organization for Migration said a mid-September fire killed at least 50 on a vessel carrying 75 Sudanese refugees.
