Top German prosecutor leads drone probe in suspected attack on national security

Federal prosecutors say the drone carried professional explosives and a detonator, and investigators are also probing a possible second object that hit a cargo jet.

  • On Wednesday, authorities discovered a drone carrying an explosive device at Leipzig and Halle airport, a major hub for DHL and Antonov Airlines, causing flight suspensions and triggering a national security investigation.
  • Several aircraft were diverted on Tuesday after a second, unidentified flying object appeared shortly before midnight; a DHL cargo aircraft struck the unknown object during go-around, landing safely in Hanover roughly 125 miles northwest.
  • The Central Office for Extremism Saxony and state counter-terrorism officers assumed control, removing the detonator from the drone. A technical defect prevented the explosive from detonating, according to investigators.
  • German airports remain on high alert following unauthorized drone overflights at military and logistics sites, as Federal police officials indicated these incidents could have been organized by Russian agents.
  • European security agencies previously investigated 2024 incendiary devices found in freight shipments across the continent. Russia has denied any involvement in those incidents or the more recent overflights.
