Anthony Bourdain Becomes a Chef in 'Tony' Biopic Trailer
The biopic follows Bourdain before fame as a restaurant job in Provincetown changes his life.
A24 unveiled the first trailer for 'Tony' on Tuesday, featuring actor Dominic Sessa as a young Anthony Bourdain. Directed by Matt Johnson, the biopic centers on a pivotal summer in 1975 before Bourdain achieved global fame.
Rather than a standard cradle-to-casket biopic, the film depicts a transformative 1975 summer in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Bourdain's estate supports this approach, stating it 'doesn't attempt to summarize a life,' but interprets an unknown, formative period.
After a rejected writing fellowship, the 19-year-old Bourdain stumbles into a chaotic seafood restaurant kitchen in Provincetown. There, he begins learning the culinary trade under a harsh head chef played by Antonio Banderas.
Joining Sessa in the ensemble cast are Emilia Jones, Leo Woodall, Dagmara Dominczyk, Rich Sommers, and Stavros Halkias. Produced by Tim White and Trevor White, the film releases in theaters this August.
Breaking from the traditional biopic arc seen in 'Bohemian Rhapsody' or 'Elvis,' the film avoids summarizing Bourdain's later professional success. It captures the origins of the late culinary icon, who died by suicide at age 61 in 2018.
