Late at night on April 18, 250 years ago, Boston, Massachusetts, was shrouded in silence when two oil lamps suddenly lit up in the bell tower of the North Cathedral. Paul Revere, a 43-year-old silversmith, mounted his horse and galloped away in the shadows of the moonlight. He bypassed British patrols, crossed the Charles River, and pounded on farmhouse doors along the way, shouting, "The British are coming!"
