Confirmed: We're Getting a Mayor with Powers over Transport, Housing and Education
SUSSEX AND HAMPSHIRE, ENGLAND, JUL 17 – The devolution programme grants Sussex and Hampshire new powers over transport, housing, and jobs, with a 30-year investment fund supporting long-term local planning, officials said.
- On Thursday, July 17, Jim McMahon OBE MP confirmed creation of the mayoral authority, the first election due next May under the first past the post system.
- Last week, the Devolution Bill 2025 set out the powers to be devolved, Mr Mahon said statutory tests have been met, and legislation will establish new councils early in 2026.
- The public consultation earlier this year received over 1,300 responses, about two thirds disagreed an MCCA would deliver benefits or improve services, and respondents feared Brighton and Hove would dominate rural areas.
- Brighton & Hove and Sussex council leaders welcomed the approval, the government called devolution `fundamental` to achieving growth, and Councillor Bella Sankey said it would lead to more affordable housing and jobs.
- The region will gain powers over transport, housing, education, healthcare and local economic development, as part of a fast-track programme covering around 1.5 million people led by elected mayors with devolved powers over growth, investment and planning.
