Minnesota sues TikTok, alleging it preys on young people with addictive algorithms

The lawsuit alleges TikTok exploits young users' neurodevelopmental vulnerabilities causing excessive use, mental health harm, and documented exploitation through app features, Minnesota officials say.

  • On Tuesday, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced he is suing TikTok in state court, alleging the app preys on Minnesota's young people and violates consumer protection laws.
  • Ellison argues the app's design preys on young people in Minnesota's neurodevelopmental vulnerabilities, alleging addictiveness stems from leadership's profit-driven choices; he said, `If you know nothing else about TikTok, you know it's extremely addicting`.
  • According to the lawsuit, a Minnesota survey found 54% of 11th graders reported depression and nearly 70% anxiety, while TikTok Live and unlicensed virtual currencies are linked to exploitation claims.
  • The state is seeking a declaration, a permanent injunction, and up to $25,000 per instance a minor accessed TikTok, joining about 24 states and more than a dozen Democratic attorneys general in litigation.
  • The lawsuit comes as Congress passed a TikTok ban last year requiring ByteDance Ltd. to sell the app or face removal; TikTok disputes claims and notes it has 170 million American users.
