The Mississippi Department of Public Safety uncovers rare KKK artifacts in one of its offices
Officials found a Ku Klux Klan robe, charter, and membership lists showing dues paid or owed from the violent 1960s White Knights faction, which had nearly 100,000 members in Mississippi, experts said.
- Last week, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety discovered Ku Klux Klan artifacts inside a suitcase while clearing an office for relocation. DPS Commissioner Sean Tindell transferred the items to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
- Historically, the Klan operated with deep overlap with law enforcement. In 1964, Neshoba County Deputy Sheriff Cecil Price, a Klansman, conspired in the three civil rights workers killed during the Mississippi Burning killings.
- Unearthed items include Klan charters, recruitment materials, and a pamphlet titled "The Ugly Truth about Martin Luther King." Charles Taylor, executive director of the Mississippi State Conference of the NAACP, said he is "glad these stories are coming out.
