Turkish Lawmakers Approve a 3-Nation Defense Pact with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan
The pact passed 279-119 and could limit any Turkish deployment to training, advisory services and military equipment, officials said.
- On Thursday, Turkey's parliament ratified the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, passing with 279 votes to clear the way for potential military support against Iran-backed Houthi attacks.
- Signed in August, the 16-article accord mandates that an attack on one member constitutes an attack on all, as Riyadh seeks to reduce dependence on the United States and diversify security partnerships.
- Opposition lawmakers, including the Yeni Party and pro-Kurdish DEM Party, voted against the bill, arguing it could draw Turkey into regional conflicts and impose unclear military obligations without sufficient parliamentary oversight.
- Defense Minister Yasar Guler stated the primary aim 'would be to strengthen deterrence,' adding that Turkey does not foresee entering conflicts with the Houthis, and any deployment requires separate parliamentary approval.
- Discussions are underway regarding Syria potentially joining the pact, according to Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani, though existing members remain focused on efforts to 'institutionalize' the agreement before accepting third-party participants.
