Swedish Government Pushes Forward with Bid to Revoke Gang Criminals' Citizenship

SUBMITTER. The government and Sweden Democrats' investigation into regaining citizenship has murky intentions. When states begin to demand ideological or cultural purity as a condition for citizenship, then we no longer live in a democracy – but in a nation that scrutinizes people, where some are always guests, writes Juan Fonseca, former member of parliament for the Social Democrats and a Swedish citizen since the 1980s.

Cases involving identified gang criminals should be scrutinized with extra care by the authorities. Permits should be revoked and incorrect compensation should be stopped.

On Monday 26 May, the Swedish government announced that it would accelerate its work in order to be able to revoke Swedish citizenship of binationals, a project targeting gang members.

The Tidö government is targeting criminal immigrants with dual citizenship. Approximately 1,100 people could be covered.

Sweden's conservative-led government has appointed a new inquiry to look into how dual citizens involved in gang crime could have their Swedish citizenship revoked.

The government is appointing an investigation to revoke the citizenship of gang criminals – something that is not possible today. Around 1,100 people could be covered by the proposal.
