The European Commission has published its annual report on the state of the rule of law in all 27 member states. The biggest reservations are again directed at Hungary and Slovakia. According to the Commission, both countries have long-term failures in key areas such as the fight against corruption, the independence of the judiciary, the functioning of civil society and media pluralism.

In an anonymous survey of judicial independence organized by the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary, Slovak judges scored 8.4 on a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 being the highest possible level of independence, compared to an average of 8.5 points. In terms of personal independence of judges, Slovakia scored 9.3 points, compared to an average of 9.1 within the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary. The report comes from the webs…
