French Court to Rule on Pensions Reform

France's top constitutional court is on Friday to decide whether it approves President Emmanuel Macron's contentious pensions reform after months of protests against the legislation. If the Constitutional Council gives its green light for the core parts of the bill, the centrist 45-year-old leader hopes to sign the changes into law immediately, clearing the way for them to be implemented by year-end.

The Constitutional Court on Wednesday rejected a proposal by ANO members to repeal the pension reform. The opposition criticized in vain both the content and the manner in which the amendment was approved. Among other things, it gradually raises the retirement age from 65 to 67 years and narrows the list of professions that are entitled to an early pension without reducing the amount received.
