Tesla’s ‘American-made’ cars won’t get hit as hard by the auto tariffs
- On Wednesday, a 25% tariff was announced on all imported cars and car parts, set to begin on April 3.
- Tesla, according to its official X account on Sunday, has dominated Car.com's American-Made Index since 2021 and claims to produce the most American-made cars, based on criteria like assembly location, engine origin, transmission origin, and US manufacturing workforce.
- According to an October 2024 document from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, between 60% to 75% of components for all Tesla cars were made in the US or Canada, while 20% to 25% were imported, though the specific countries of origin were not specified.
- Analysts at JP Morgan and Wolfe Research predict Tesla will be largely shielded from these tariffs compared to rivals like Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis, potentially giving Tesla a boost in the EV competition, though Wolfe Research also forecasts a potential $1.6 billion annual headwind due to components made in Mexico.
- While Tesla's stock initially rose after the tariff announcement, shares of Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis fell, and despite Tesla producing 100% of its vehicles in the US in factories located in Texas and California, Elon Musk acknowledged that "there is truly no 100% American-made car," and Patrick Masterson from Cars.com stated, "no one's going to be immune from these tariffs.
