Temperatures to drop this week but relief from heat may be short-lived
Forecasters say temperatures will ease this week before rising again early next week, with some areas possibly reaching heatwave conditions.
The Met Office issued a statement confirming a "potential heatwave" is on the way following last week's record-breaking temperatures and forecasters expecting rising heat after average conditions.
After a record-breaking June heatwave last week, temperatures have returned to average, providing relief for many. Neil Armstrong, a Met Office chief forecaster, added, "With last week's heat behind us, there will be much relief for many this week."
The Met Office confirmed the highest June temperature was recorded in Lingwood, Norfolk last Friday, measuring 0.4 of a degree higher than real-time readings, with current conditions in the low to mid 20s Celsius.
Toward the weekend, high pressure extending from the Azores will bring warmer conditions across England and Wales. Tony Wisson, a Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster, said temperatures could approach high 20s Celsius, perhaps higher in parts of the southeast.
Met Office experts said temperatures will return to average before heat returns early next week, though this event is unlikely to match the extreme humidity of last week's conditions.
