Taylorsville Officer Charged with Manslaughter in 2024 Deadly Shooting
Prosecutors say Jimmy Jeremy Haas used unjustified force and violated police standards when he fired once at an unarmed driver.
- On Thursday, Salt Lake County prosecutors charged Taylorsville police officer Detective Jimmy Jeremy Haas with second-degree felony manslaughter for the October 9, 2024, shooting death of 28-year-old Henry Chavez Jr.
- Following a pursuit after police located a stolen vehicle, Haas followed Chavez into a parking lot near 3900 South and 300 West, where he fired through the pickup truck's rear windshield as Chavez sat unarmed inside.
- Use-of-Force expert Eric Daigle concluded Haas's actions were "not reasonable and consistent with general industry standards," while prosecutors allege no firearms were found on Chavez, in the vehicle, or at the scene.
- Court documents allege police delayed resuscitation efforts for 16 minutes after the shooting, while Haas currently remains on paid leave pending further legal proceedings.
- Haas faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted, while Taylorsville spokesperson Kim Horiuchi stated, "We have confidence in the system and we believe every person is innocent until they are proven guilty at trial.
