Taylor Farms pulls iceberg lettuce from central Mexico linked to US parasite outbreak
The company is removing iceberg lettuce from central Mexico as federal investigators link the product to at least 1,645 illnesses in 34 states.
- Taylor Farms has announced a voluntary, indefinite removal of all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the U.S. market following a massive multistate parasite outbreak.
- The decision follows a federal traceback investigation by the FDA and CDC, which linked the contaminated produce to a single independent farm in Mexico that accounts for less than 1% of the U.S. iceberg lettuce supply.
- The contaminated shredded lettuce was heavily distributed to Taco Bell locations across Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia, prompting the fast-food chain to pull the ingredient nationwide and find a replacement within 24 hours.
- The outbreak involves Cyclospora cayetanensis, a microscopic parasite that infects the bowels and causes severe, prolonged, and sometimes explosive watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fatigue.
- Public health officials have confirmed at least 1,644 cases and nearly 100 hospitalizations across more than 30 states since May, with thousands of additional backlogged infections still under active investigation.
