NARAYANAPURAM VILLAGE NEAR SIVAKASI, TAMIL NADU, INDIA, JUL 21 – Three workers died and three were injured in a firecracker factory explosion triggered by chemical friction, marking the third such incident in southern Tamil Nadu this month.

  • A blast occurred around 3:50 PM on Monday at the Shri Mariamman Fireworks and Amorces facility in Naranapuram, Sivakasi district, resulting in the deaths of three workers and injuries to three others.
  • The explosion took place while workers were producing crackers and is believed to have resulted from the friction between chemicals involved in the process.
  • The victims were confirmed as T. Karthik, aged 25; S. Sangeetha, aged 42; and G. Lakshmi, aged 45, all residents of Muthuramalingapuram Colony. Additionally, the explosion completely destroyed four work sheds.
  • Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed sorrow, announced ₹4 lakh to families of the deceased, ₹1 lakh for seriously injured, ₹50,000 for minor injuries, and police registered a case and suspended the factory licence.
  • The incident has raised renewed apprehensions about the enforcement of safety measures and regulatory monitoring in Sivakasi, an area that has experienced several comparable accidents this month, while investigations continue to identify the precise cause.
