Taiwan launches search for missing F-16 fighter jet pilot
- On Jan 6, Taiwan's Air Force launched a search and emergency response centre after a pilot ejected during training; the Air Force said, `At 7.29 pm, the pilot was suspected to have ejected about 10 nautical miles east of Fengbin Township in Hualien County.`
- The night-time mission began at 6:17 p.m., when an F-16V single-seat fighter took off from Hualien Air Base, and Formosa Television reported its light source malfunctioned before the pilot ejected.
- The Coast Guard Administration dispatched vessels from northern, eastern and southern fleets and contacted commercial cargo ships, while a Black Hawk and a C-130 dropped illumination flares for the search.
- Officials named the pilot as Hsin Po-yi, a captain, who had logged 611 flight hours, including 371 on F-16V jets before Tuesday's incident.
- Against a backdrop of increased Chinese incursions in recent years, Taiwan's Defence Ministry and Defence Minister Wellington Koo highlighted the ongoing upgrades of 141 F-16s and a 6-aircraft order, amid regional pressure.
