Tab Baldwin resigns as head coach of Ateneo Blue Eagles - BusinessWorld Online
Ateneo accepted his resignation as police and labor officials investigate the drownings of two players, with the school also withdrawing from preseason play.
On Monday, June 15, Ateneo de Manila University accepted the resignations of head coach Tab Baldwin and team manager Christopher Quimpo, effective immediately, following the deaths of two student-athletes.
The resignations follow the June 8 drowning of Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a team-building activity at Hermanos Leisure Farm in Barangay Lipit, Dipaculao, Aurora.
Baldwin and other officials failed to appear at a Criminal Investigation and Detection Group inquiry on Monday, prompting authorities to warn that a second absence warrants contempt of court.
Ateneo withdrew from the Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup and announced scholarships and funeral assistance for the families, as President Roberto Yap vowed to examine athletic program systems.
Lawmakers are seeking a congressional inquiry into the incident as police probers investigate possible homicide and violations of the Anti-Hazing Law, expanding scrutiny beyond the sport.
