ECFR Poll Finds 11% of Europeans View U.S. as Ally

The poll found 47% back collective EU borrowing for defence, while majorities in every country except Bulgaria doubt the US would defend Europe.

  • A wide-ranging report commissioned by the European Council on Foreign Relations across 15 countries shows that "European trust in the US has crashed to new lows." This survey of 19,481 respondents indicates a sharp decline in sentiment.
  • President Donald Trump is viewed by many as having damaged the relationship between Europe and the USA, though many hope for improvement after he leaves office. "They do think the US will come back," the ECFR notes.
  • Data reveals that only 11 percent of Europeans now consider the USA an ally, while 25 percent see it as a rival or adversary. "The decline has been steady," the report notes.
  • Resolute in opposing fossil-fuel imports from Russia, Europeans increasingly recognize the need for autonomous security. "Europeans do not expect America under Donald Trump to protect them," the report states.
  • With major elections looming in 2027, leaders face pressure to harness this new-found public realism while navigating challenges to the bilateral EU-Ukraine partnership. "Unless addressed with more creativity, these trends may create a headache," the survey notes.
