Supreme Court blocks Trump from suspending transgender medical care in federal prisons
The justices left in place a lower-court ruling for about 1,000 inmates after finding the Bureau of Prisons had not adequately weighed the evidence.
- On Wednesday, the Supreme Court rejected the Trump administration's emergency request to enforce a policy restricting medical care for transgender inmates in federal custody.
- Mandated by a January 2025 executive order, the policy required federal agencies to reject gender identity outside of an "immutable biological classification," though the Bureau of Prisons had provided hormone therapy since 1992.
- Earlier this year, Washington-based District Judge Royce Lamberth blocked the proposal, concluding the Bureau of Prisons provided no evidence that the previous plan was "ineffective or harmful."
- Dissenting from the order, Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito would have granted the request, marking a rare recent victory for transgender advocates at the 6-3 conservative majority court.
- In other cases, the Supreme Court has previously allowed the administration to implement bans on transgender military service while upholding state restrictions on transgender athletes and youth treatments.
