- On Monday, the Supreme Court appointed a Special Investigation Team led by Justice Jasti Chelameswar to look into alleged irregularities at the Vantara Wildlife Rescue Centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat.
- The court ordered the SIT following PILs by lawyer CR Jaya Sukin and others, citing allegations of illegal animal acquisition, mistreatment, and financial irregularities, though noting lack of substantial evidence.
- The SIT is a four-member team including Justice Raghavendra Chauhan, IPS officer Hemant Nagrale, and IRS officer Anish Gupta, tasked to assess compliance with wildlife laws, CITES, animal welfare, environmental and financial regulations.
- The investigation will cover issues such as acquisition of elephants domestically and internationally, adherence to Wildlife Protection Act and zoo rules, animal husbandry standards, environmental concerns, alleged wildlife smuggling, and financial misuses.
- The SIT is required to complete its investigation and present its findings before September 12, receiving support from multiple authorities to help the court assess the situation without making any preliminary judgments regarding the allegations or Vantara’s operations.
