Government advises OTT platforms to stop streaming Pakistan-origin content amid tensions
- India's Ministry of Information and Broadcasting ordered all OTT platforms to remove Pakistani content on May 8, 2025, citing national security in New Delhi.
- The advisory was issued in response to the terror attack near Pahalgam on April 22, which resulted in 26 fatalities, including 25 Hindu tourists, and was followed by India's retaliatory strikes on Pakistani targets under Operation Sindoor.
- The prohibition applies to all Pakistani-origin content on streaming platforms, including shows, movies, music, audio programs, and other online materials, in accordance with the 2021 IT Rules that mandate content must not jeopardize India’s sovereignty or public order.
- India banned 16 YouTube channels from Pakistan, accusing them of spreading misinformation, and also took action against social media accounts of prominent Pakistani figures; in response, Pakistan blocked numerous Indian channels and websites.
