Stone Quarry Collapses in Sonbhadra's Billi Markundi Village in Uttar Pradesh, Several Labourers Trapped

  • On Friday, a portion of a stone quarry in Sonebhadra collapsed, killing one worker and leaving several others feared trapped at Krishna Mining Works near Obra police station.
  • Drilling with nine compression machines immediately preceded the collapse, as workers drilled holes when the upper rock layer suddenly cracked and buried several labourers below.
  • Police and administrative teams reached the site immediately, with NDRF and SDRF teams from Mirzapur conducting rescue as local officials coordinate relief.
  • Minister of State for Social Welfare Sanjeev Kumar Gond, who is also the local MLA, visited the site with district officials, confirmed ex-gratia compensation for affected families and called it a very sad incident.
  • Initial reports put presence at around 12 to 15 workers, none of whom escaped in time, while officials warn a strong possibility that dozens may be trapped and promise a probe with strict action.
