Starmer ‘Won’t Back Down’ in Fight with Musk’s X over Grok AI Sexualised Images
UK ministers push for new criminal laws after Grok generated non-consensual sexual images; Ofcom may fine X up to £18 million if non-compliant, officials said.
- On Wednesday, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer told MPs he `won't back down` as he pressured Elon Musk and X to restrict Grok's sexual image creation, stating X is acting to comply with UK law.
- Earlier this week Ofcom launched a probe into claims Grok was being used to digitally undress people, with powers under the Online Safety Act to fine platforms up to 10% of revenue or 18m and seek court orders to block sites.
- Minutes after her Commons question, trolls used Grok to request AI images of Labour MP Emily Darlington in bikinis or naked; she said `we can enforce UK law` while Liz Kendall called limiting Grok to paying users `monetising abuse`.
- Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said the new criminal offence would be brought into force this week under the Data Act, though a Department of Science, Innovation and Technology spokesman said enforcement would begin in February.
- Mr Musk initially called proposed bans `fascist` and defended free speech before reportedly removing the tool; Sarah B. Rogers, US administration representative, said yesterday the US will await Ofcom's verdict, citing the UK's leverage as one of two English-language centres.
