Elon Musk says Starlink's entry in India 'blocked' by oligarchs, alleges 'monopolistic chokehold'
On Thursday, the Indian government refuted claims by tech tycoon Elon Musk that "certain oligarchs" are blocking his satellite service, labeling the accusations "baseless and misconceived."
Musk alleged on Wednesday that Starlink faces a "monopolistic chokehold" by "certain oligarchs" seeking to protect their market dominance, calling the situation "a crime against the people of India."
Vice President, Starlink Business Operations Lauren Dreyer stated on Wednesday the company built 20 gateway sites in India with "India-specific security controls," keeping user data within the country.
Officials clarified that all three licensed satellite communication companies, including Starlink, are at the same regulatory stage while undergoing mandatory security assessments before spectrum assignment.
Starlink competes in India's emerging satellite market against Reliance Jio, Amazon Leo, and Eutelsat OneWeb as regulators finalize spectrum allocation and direct-to-device service frameworks.
