Sri Lanka sent home 238 Iranian sailors, including survivors of a US torpedo attack
On Friday, Sri Lanka repatriated 238 Iranian sailors, including 32 who survived an American torpedo attack that sank their vessel in the Indian Ocean.
An American submarine sank the IRIS Dena on March 4 while the warship was returning from naval exercises hosted by India, leaving 87 dead and 32 hospitalized.
Franklin Joseph confirmed Friday that nearly all sailors except a few crew members from a second ship, docked at a southern port for technical problems, were repatriated earlier this week.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake declined requests from both American military forces to land aircraft and Iran to bring warships ashore, prioritizing national sovereignty during the crisis.
Former United Nations representative H.M.G.S. Palihakkara said the approach "enhanced Sri Lanka's government's credibility" by acting on legality and humanity rather than taking sides in the conflict.
