Spotify to Launch Badge Identifying AI Music to Users
Spotify will tag AI-generated artist identities and exclude their tracks from editorial and algorithmic recommendations unless users follow them.
- Starting Tuesday, Spotify announced it will begin labeling AI-generated artists with 'AI Persona' tags, barring their music from editorial and algorithmic recommendations to ensure the platform remains the 'most transparent and trustworthy place to listen to music.'
- Facing an influx of up to 90,000 daily AI-generated tracks representing more than 50% of new music uploads, Spotify is acting to protect human creators from low-quality content that threatens subscription cancellations through poor user experience.
- Starting in mid-September, 'AI Persona' badges will appear on artist profiles, search results, and playlists, with Spotify using human review alongside AI investigative tools rather than relying on self-disclosure alone to identify these personas.
- Unless listeners explicitly follow an AI Persona, music from labeled personas will be excluded from personalized recommendations by default; users will gain the ability to report suspicious profiles in the coming months.
- These efforts build on recent transparency tools like SongDNA and Credits, following French streamer Deezer, which was the first to tag and exclude AI-generated music from algorithmic recommendations to improve listener trust.
