AstraZeneca Strikes $40 Million AI Drug Discovery Deal with Insitro
The multi-year deal gives insitro $40 million upfront and could pay about $1.46 billion in milestones and royalties.
On Thursday, AstraZeneca partnered with California-based biotech company Insitro to discover and develop treatments for MASH and cardiomyopathies, complex diseases affecting the liver and heart muscle.
Researchers have historically struggled to pinpoint root biological drivers for these complex diseases, prompting AstraZeneca to seek new approaches after failing in mid-stage MASH trials last year.
Under the agreement, AstraZeneca will pay $40 million upfront, with Insitro eligible for about $1.5 billion in potential development and commercial milestones, plus single-digit royalties.
Insitro will apply its "Virtual Human" AI platform to identify causal disease biology and advance targets to development-candidate stage, while AstraZeneca will run and fund all future clinical trials.
CEO Daphne Koller said Insitro focuses on early-stage discovery, recently expanding partnerships with Bristol Myers Squibb for ALS research and Eli Lilly for AI modeling of molecular properties.
Pharmaceutical company Astra Zeneca has signed a licensing agreement with the company Insitro, which will receive $40 million in an immediate one-time payment and the possibility of receiving up to approximately $1.46 billion in development and commercial milestones plus single-digit royalties.
