SP Chief Whip in UP Assembly Kamal Akhtar Resigns, Says No ‘Rift’ with Party MP Veera
The Samajwadi Party will name a new chief whip from PDA communities after Kamal Akhtar said he followed Akhilesh Yadav’s order to step down.
On Tuesday, June 30, 2026, Samajwadi Party Chief Whip Kamal Akhtar resigned from his post following instructions from party president Akhilesh Yadav to step down and allow new leadership.
Akhtar, a senior MLA representing the Kanth Assembly constituency, affirmed his resignation allows new leadership opportunities while reaffirming his duty as a disciplined party worker to follow Yadav's directions.
"My leader, Akhilesh Yadav, directed me that I should no longer work in this post," Akhtar said, noting organisational changes mirror when former chief whip Manoj Pandey resigned in 2024.
SP spokesperson Sunil Singh Yadav Sajan confirmed a new chief whip will be appointed from within the PDA communities, reflecting the party's strategy for organizational renewal.
Reported differences between Akhtar and SP MP Ruchi Veera preceded the resignation, as political parties nationwide undergo similar organisational shifts and internal realignments amid broader leadership transitions.
