Pompey Boss' Southampton Spygate Verdict as Eckert’s Cleared for South-Coast Derby
Eckert avoided an immediate touchline ban after accepting responsibility for the spying case, and Southampton said safeguards are in place after the ruling.
- On Wednesday, the English Football Association handed Southampton manager Tonda Eckert a suspended six-week ban and £28,000 fine for his role in the 'Spygate' scandal, allowing him to remain in his position.
- An independent disciplinary commission previously ruled that Eckert 'specifically authorised' spying on opponents, resulting in the club's exclusion from last season's Championship playoff final and a four-point deduction.
- Southampton stated this decision brings a 'regrettable period of our history to a conclusion,' adding that 'measures have been put in place to ensure that such errors in judgement never happen again.'
- With the uncertainty resolved, Eckert is free to lead the team against rivals Portsmouth in the South Coast derby this Sunday at St Mary's.
- Former Southampton striker James Beattie believes a new contract for the German coach should be 'high on the agenda,' noting the decision provides a 'little shot in the arm' for the squad.
