SNP to Pursue Peter Murrell for Money He Embezzled From Party
The party will also seek a compensation order and prepare civil action as prosecutors pursue confiscation of Murrell’s assets.
Peter Murrell admitted to embezzling over £400,000 from the Scottish National Party over 12 years using false invoices and misleading accounting entries, spending the money on luxury items including a campervan and a Jaguar I-PACE.
The party's National Executive Committee unanimously agreed to pursue legal action to recover the stolen funds through a compensation order under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, a process expected to take up to four years.
The party is in talks with HMRC about possible illegal VAT reclaimed on Murrell's purchases, and calls for a parliamentary inquiry have been declined in favor of relying on the police investigation that convicted Murrell.
SNP members have expressed upset over the scandal, but candidate Lara Bird does not expect it to significantly impact the party’s vote in the upcoming by-election in Arbroath and Broughty Ferry.
