Slovak prosecutor ends probe over fighter jets, air defence systems donated to Ukraine
Prosecutor Rastislav Remeta ruled 2023 donations of MiG-29 jets and S-300 air-defence systems lawful, citing outdated equipment and no evidence of unlawful benefit.
- On Feb 5, Bratislava Regional Prosecutor's Office announced prosecutors halted criminal proceedings in three of four cases tied to aid to Ukraine at a Thursday press conference.
- After reviewing NKU findings and ministry records, prosecutors concluded the donations and contract termination were lawful and fiscally justified, noting maintenance would cost tens of millions yearly and no fiduciary breach was proven.
- The investigations involved MiG-29 fighter jets and S-300 air-defence systems, which prosecutors described as outdated, and the successor to the Russian maintenance firm accepted contract termination, a senior defence official said.
- Two additional criminal complaints were filed last week, and the UBOK 'Donor' team continues probes amid Fico's 2023 military aid halt.
- Remeta said `In the event of war or in a state of war, Slovakia wouldn't have been able to fully protect its airspace using the available systems of the Slovak armed forces, as the air-defence assets and tactical aircraft were insufficient both in terms of quantity and interoperability`, noting the equipment's almost zero value despite a 500 million euro damage estimate, with an inquiry into the technical documentation handover remaining open.
