Sharks Trade Pending UFA Defenseman to Washington Capitals

Sharks traded Liljegren, a pending unrestricted free agent, to gain a fourth-round pick and create roster space for younger defensemen during the playoff push, GM Mike Grier said.

  • On Friday, the San Jose Sharks traded defenseman Timothy Liljegren to the Washington Capitals for a fourth-round draft pick this year, TSN's Chris Johnston reported.
  • Wanting to recoup an asset, Sharks general manager Mike Grier traded Timothy Liljegren on Friday amid six pending UFAs including Ryan Reaves and John Klingberg.
  • Across his time with San Jose, Liljegren had 21 points and averaged just under 20 minutes of ice time per game after being acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Oct. 30, 2024.
  • Shakir Mukhamadullin moved into the vacated role and logged a season-high 22:47 of ice time Friday, while the Sharks recalled Nolan Allan from the Barracuda on Saturday.
  • The trade converts a pending UFA into a draft asset, increasing the importance of offseason decisions as the Sharks have only two left-shot defensemen signed past this season, Grier said.
