Mahmood announces new refugee sponsorship route into UK

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced a new plan to open safe and legal sponsorship routes for refugees, allowing thousands of people to legally enter and settle in the UK.
The new policy includes three distinct pathways starting this autumn, enabling community groups, universities, and eventually employers to directly sponsor eligible refugees.
Inspired by a highly successful Canadian model that has resettled 400,000 people since 1979, the UK government aims to gradually scale up the program to accept thousands of genuine refugees each year.
Alongside these legal routes, the upcoming immigration bill will heavily tighten human rights laws and restrict modern slavery protections to make it much easier to deport illegal migrants and foreign criminals.
The announcement comes at a politically tense time as Mahmood faces internal party pressure and seeks to build support ahead of Prime Minister Keir Starmer's upcoming resignation and a leadership transition.
