Tesla Model 3/Y with Chinese LG Batteries Showing ‘Catastrophic’ Failure Rates, Repair Shop Warns
EV Clinic reports over 90% of LG NCM811 battery packs in Tesla Model 3 and Y vehicles fail catastrophically, with lifespans nearly 40% shorter than Panasonic packs.
- EV Clinic, a Croatia-based repair and R&D shop, warned that LGES NCM811 packs from Nanjing show very high failure rates and in over 90% of cases are unrepairable at the cell level.
- High internal resistance in the cells means Nanjing-made cells commonly exceed 100 milliohms, causing uniform module degradation and cascading failures, unlike Panasonic 2170 cylindrical cells with lower resistance and single-cell faults.
- EV Clinic's diagnostics show out of 46 cells in a 46-cell module, 15 are over 100 mΩ and 30 above 50 mΩ, while Panasonic packs last about 248,000 miles and LGES China-made end at 155,000 miles; repairs cost thousands.
- Owners are advised to swap failed LG packs for a used Panasonic pack or seek Tesla replacements, while EV Clinic warned this could be a headache for Tesla in Europe; neither Tesla nor LG Energy Solution commented.
- Although Tesla diversified suppliers, these results could create headaches if scaled, contrasting durable CATL LFP packs with riskier NCM chemistry and broader EV battery studies show few replacements needed.

Tesla Battery Reliability Questioned After New Tests
Concerns have grown regarding the reliability of Chinese-made batteries used in certain Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, following new technical assessments questioning their longevity and repairability. The issue centers on NCM811 lithium-ion battery packs produced by LG Energy Solutions, which are installed in a portion of these popular Tesla models. The topic resurfaces shortly after another report described the Model Y as one of the least…
Owners of a Tesla with LG cells produced in China have to adjust to a limited (re)lifespan of their battery. Analyses show that these packs age significantly faster than the competition of Panasonic. (Continue reading)
