Sensex Tumbles 813 Points to 3-Month Low Amid Escalating Tensions in West Asia, Oil Price Surge
Brent crude near $101 and weak market breadth fueled a third straight day of losses, with Nifty IT and Realty dropping more than 2%.
On Wednesday, September 9, 2026, the BSE Sensex tumbled 813.35 points, or 1.08%, to settle at 74,764.23, while the NSE Nifty declined 0.86% to 23,431.50, marking a third consecutive day of market losses.
Escalating tensions in West Asia drove Brent crude to over $100 per barrel, fueling inflation concerns that weighed on investor sentiment and contributed to the broad risk-off mood across Indian markets.
India VIX climbed more than 6%, reflecting increased hedging activity, according to Ponmudi, CEO of Enrich Money; while Nifty Metal gained 1.79%, Nifty IT and Nifty Realty dropped 3.24% and 2.23%, respectively.
A relentless surge in global oil prices reignited inflationary fears for India, pushing the rupee into defensive territory as it depreciated 29 paise, said Nandish Shah, Deputy Vice President, HDFC Securities.
Broader markets fell alongside benchmarks, with both Nifty Midcap and Smallcap down 0.5%, while Asian markets showed mixed results and European markets were trading lower amid persistent global uncertainty.
