Blackhawks Trade Andre Burakovsky to the Senators as the Avalanche Bring Back Brent Burns
The move clears $5.5 million in cap space for Chicago, which now has 11 picks in next year’s NHL draft.
On Friday, the Chicago Blackhawks traded 31-year-old forward Andre Burakovsky to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick, ending his one-season tenure.
Burakovsky struggled significantly last season, recording only four points in 37 games since January 9, allowing the Blackhawks to clear his $5.5 million salary-cap hit.
A two-time Stanley Cup winner, Burakovsky is joining his fifth NHL organization after stints with Washington, Colorado, and Seattle; the Blackhawks retained no salary in the deal.
Ottawa Senators General Manager Steve Staios expressed enthusiasm for the acquisition, stating the club added "skill and playmaking ability" to their forward group.
The Blackhawks now have approximately $36.31 million in salary-cap space, providing flexibility for contract negotiations with core players Connor Bedard and Bowen Byram.
