They're controversial: neighborhood blocks are intended to reduce car traffic in residential areas. Now the Senate is no longer providing any funding for them. The Mitte district is perplexed.
The CDU-led traffic administration stops the establishment of neighbourhood blocks for traffic calming throughout the city. On Thursday, the district of Mitte was instructed to terminate a model project immediately, the financing was cancelled.
Turnaround in transport policy: The Senate turns the district to the money tap. Funding is discontinued – with far-reaching consequences for Berlin.
The Senate Department of Transport is cutting the funding for the green transport project "Kiezblocks" and calling for the cessation of all planning. Among other things, the traffic blockades would have prevented the fire brigade and the police in their operations. Criticism is hailed by SPD and the Greens.
With bollards, closures and bicycle roads, some street trains are calmed down in Berlin. The Senate does not consider the concerns of residents and businessmen sufficiently - and stops its subsidies for further neighbourhood blocks.
