Senate launches inquiry into Coast Guard’s reported mishandling of sexual assaults

  • A U.S. Senate subcommittee is reviewing the handling of sexual assault cases at the U.S. Coast Guard's training academy, where 63 potential victims were identified between 1990 and 2006. Despite the Coast Guard's awareness of 30 victims, only five cases were reported to investigative services or law enforcement.
  • The Coast Guard has faced criticism for prioritizing its organization and reputation over the well-being of the victims, allowing some of the accused to attain top roles in the Coast Guard and other military agencies. Many victims have suffered negative effects on their careers and mental and physical health. The suppression of a report detailing the assault cases has also raised serious questions.
  • In response, Coast Guard leaders have apologized, launched their own review of policies, and briefed congressional leaders. However, lawmakers are calling for independent investigations and more transparency from the agency.
