'No One Is Above the Law': Giannoulias Warns ICE Agents that Swapping Illinois License Plates Is Illegal
Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias established a hotline after multiple reports of ICE agents illegally modifying license plates to evade detection during immigration operations.
- On Wednesday, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias launched the Plate Watch Hotline and warned, `Swapping out license plates or tampering with them to avoid or conceal detection is illegal, unsafe and will not be tolerated in Illinois.`
- A circulating social media video appears to show a federal officer saying, `You can record all you want. We change the plates out every day,` while the Chicago Sun-Times documented four unmarked cars at the Broadview federal immigration processing facility earlier this month.
- Under Illinois law, Illinois-registered vehicles must display two unobstructed plates, and offenses can lead to fines, jail time, and plate suspension or revocation by the Secretary of State's office.
- Amid court orders, Tricia McLaughlin, DHS Assistant Secretary, said officers face a `1000%` increase in assaults and DHS and ICE did not return requests for comment.
- The warning comes amid an intensified federal enforcement push across the Chicago area under President Donald Trump that began in early September and Broadview ICE facility protests over the past month.
