Secret sex video is part of federal conspiracy case against Maryland state senator, indictment says
Sen. Dalya Attar, her brother, and a Baltimore officer face eight federal counts for extortion and conspiracy involving secret recordings to influence her 2022 campaign, prosecutors say.
- On Thursday, Oct. 30 the indictment unsealed shows Maryland state Sen. Dalya Attar, her brother Joseph Attar and Baltimore City police officer Kalman Finkelstein face eight counts including extortion and wiretapping.
- The alleged motive was to silence a former campaign consultant who worked on Attar's 2018 House of Delegates campaign after a falling out preceded the scheme.
- According to the indictment, hidden devices recorded two people in the consultant's apartment using recording devices disguised as smoke detectors, while WhatsApp messages threatened, `or I'll share this video with everybody you know, everyone she knows, every rabbi in town, your kids, your wife, her daughters.`
- A federal magistrate released the three defendants Thursday, ordering surrender of U.S. passports and travel limits, while Baltimore Police Department says Finkelstein has been on administrative duty since 2022.
- Earlier this year Attar was appointed to the Maryland Senate and is the first Orthodox Jewish woman to serve there, but the indictment may affect her District 41 run and political standing.
