Second Harvest Food Bank will be impacted by federal funding cuts
- Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Cruz, led by CEO Erica Padilla-Chavez, is facing significant challenges in serving its clientele due to recent cancellations and funding cuts in March 2025.
- The food bank experienced four cancellations in one week, resulting in a loss of over $250,000 worth of food, which the food bank was not prepared for.
- The cuts stem from actions by the Trump administration, including a freeze on Commodity Credit Corporation funding and reductions to USDA food delivery programs like The Emergency Food Assistance Program and the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program , which was established by the Biden Administration in 2021.
- As of July 1, LFPA funding will end, causing a $700,000 blow to Second Harvest, and a lack of funding has already stalled 177,000 pounds of TEFAP-funded food orders, worth $348,728, leaving uncertainty about when supplies will resume; according to Padilla-Chavez, TEFAP was essentially cancelled, and Greg Higgerson, Second Harvest's chief development officer, stated that they will have about a million less pounds of food in the short term.
- Second Harvest, which normally helps feed 65,000 people monthly, is launching a "Bridging the Gap" campaign to increase community support and keep its shelves stocked, as they anticipate an overwhelming demand on food banks with other food programs shutting down and potentially impacting low-income families; however, Padilla-Chavez remains confident the food bank will overcome these challenges.
