Search continues for 22 after bulk carrier sinks off India
Search teams are still looking for 22 missing crew members after the vessel sank within eight minutes, officials said.
On Saturday, the Panama-flagged cargo vessel Ocean Winner sank off the Odisha coast, leaving 22 of 24 crew members missing after Indian Coast Guard rescued two Chinese seafarers.
Departing Paradip Port on Thursday with iron ore cargo, the vessel developed a list on Friday and sank within eight minutes, according to Shyam Jagannathan, director general of India's Maritime Administration.
Commandant Amit Uniyal of the Coast Guard confirmed 24 crew members included 20 Chinese nationals, three Myanmar nationals, and one Bangladeshi, with 22 missing including 18 Chinese nationals.
Deploying vessels from Sri Vijaya Puram, the Indian Navy coordinates with the Coast Guard for ongoing rescue operations, though survival chances fall sharply after 12 hours.
Officials have not determined the sinking's cause as Captain Alekha Charan Sahoo of the Paradip Port Authority stated he is praying for the crew's safety.
It seems to take only a few minutes for the "Ocean Winner" to go down. Of 24 crew members, only two can escape to a life raft. Force forces are searching hundreds of kilometers off the coast of India for survivors.
